San Francisco Bay Trail Overnights/Day Trips

Below are some day trip and overnight options, including a list of hotels that are located on the Bay Trail -- higher end "credit card camping" options and lower budget options. Please feel free to contact me if you have an itinerary or ideas to submit.
Note: I followed older Bay Trail maps which included North Bay counties at that time.

Peninsula

  • Pass by marinas full of boats that testify to the Bay Area's love of sailing

  • You'll be walking through Portrero Hill and Dogpatch, two areas that have seen relatively recent renovation efforts take root
  • Pass by ATandT Park - where the San Francisco Giants play professional baseball, concerts and other events are held. (There is a ferry stop nearby.)
  • Walk along the Embarcadero, historic Ferry Building, wharf area(s)
Eats:
  • Have lunch or buy picnic ingredients at the San Francisco Ferry Building (situated on the water, at the end of Market Street, this building is chock full of local, specialty and artisan food items.

San Francisco (North: Pier 39 - Golden Gate Bridge)

  • Walk across the Golden Gate Bridge

  • Lunch at the Warming Hut Bookstore and Cafe, 983 Marine Dr. at Long Ave., Presidio of San Francisco, CA 94129 (located near the north end of Crissy Field)

  • There are few hotels actually on the Bay Trail in this part of San Francisco, but several are within a few blocks of the trail, including:

  • Hostelling International, San Francisco Fisherman's Wharf Hostel - Fort Mason, Building 240, San Francisco, CA 94123 (up the hill from the Bay Trail) 
  • Inn at the Presidio - This small hotel on 42 Moraga Ave., San Francisco, CA, in the old Presidio, is fairly close to the SF Bay Trail as the crow flies, but currently is a 1.4 mi. walk to/from Crissy Field.
Other Attractions: 
  • Pier 39 - shops and restaurants; also next to the Aquarium of the Bay
  • Fisherman's Wharf - fun in crab season; several restaurants in the area are open year-round. 
  • Ghirardelli Square - chocolate is no longer produced here; but there is an annual chocolate festival held here, and shops and restaurants are open year-round.
  • House of Air - A warehouse with wall-to-wall trampolines; need I say more? - Building 926; 926 "Old" Mason Street, West Crissy Field, The Presidio of San Francisco, CA 94129 
  • Fort Point - located near the southern end of the Golden Gate Bridge; historical fort that has been preserved.
Marin County - Fort Baker, CA

Trail Highlights:
  • Walk or ride bicycles across Golden Gate Bridge and down into Fort Baker and Sausalito
  • Views of the Bay, Golden Gate Bridge, and historic buildings in Fort Baker are quite wonderful

  • Tolay Restaurant - in the Sheraton (hotel) Sonoma County, 745 Baywood Dr., Petaluma, CA 94954 - near Bay Trail 
  • Papa's Taverna - 5688 Lakeville Highway, Petaluma, CA 94954

North Bay (Sonoma)



Trail Highlights: 
  • Walk, bicycle, or drive along rural backroads; see more grape vines than you ever imagined.
Eats: 
  • Sonoma/Napa - Stop at the Fremont Diner  for breakfast or lunch for high-end country roadhouse cooking with local ingredients
  • Schellville - The Schellville Grill - 22900 Broadway, Sonoma, CA 95476. A few blocks from the Bay Trail, off Fremont Drive (past the fire station); barbeque, home cooked meals, delicious flourless chocolate cake.
Lodging: 
  • Stay at Los Carneros Inn - (see Napa) - on the Bay Trail between Sonoma and Napa
  • Vineyard Inn - 23000 Arnold Dr., Sonoma, CA 95476 (near intersection with Fremont Dr.) on the Bay Trail
Other Attractions: 
  • Sonoma - The Olive Press - Taste and buy high-end and flavored olive oils and vinegars here in this large stone chateau-style building. Tours may also be possible; call ahead.
  • There are many wineries along the Bay Trail: including Jacuzzi Family Vineyards, Cline Cellars, Viansa Winery and Marketplace
  • Infineon Raceway (formerly known as Sears Point Raceway)


North Bay (Napa)

The historic town of Benicia offers lots of possibilities for day trip and a possible overnight stay.

Other Attractions:
  • Benicia 
    • Enjoy the old, wood Victorian houses; and what the arts community has to offer (glass-blowing, other arts). There is much more here than what you can see from Highways 680 or 780 (largely oil refinery structures).
    • The Old (California State) Capitol Building - still standing (very close to Bay Trail)
  • Martinez 
    • The same can be said for Martinez; there is much more here than you might imagine. 
    • The John Muir Historic Site (on the Bay Trail) is worth a visit; it's possible to walk through the family's home, see the remnants of their orchards, and to view Muir's study where he wrote letters, papers, stories, etc.
  • Port Costa
    • A small historic river town (one main street with a tavern, restaurant, hotel, Post Office, and one or two other storefronts); this is the kind of small town from the 1800s that has all but disappeared  in California. 
  • Crockett
    • The old CandH Sugar factory is another part of California history that is worth remembering. While not open for public tours the brick buildings and refinery are still there, next to a Crockett Cogeneration facility.
Contra Costa County
(Rodeo, Hercules, Pinole, Richmond, Pt. Richmond)

Trail Highlights:
  • Pinole Shores and Point Pinole are both very accessible parks with great Bay views
  • Parts of the trail overlap with historic route 41, and history buffs may also enjoy seeing the last remnants of old munitions/dynamite manufacturing plants that were in this area.
